Is blood glucose in the blood removed by the Liver or by the body cells?
-
A site says that blood glucose gets removed and the hormone insulin (made by the Pancreas) causes the BODY CELLS to remove the blood glucose. However my revision book says that insulin causes the LIVER to remove blood glucose from the blood and store it as glycogen. So is it the body cells or is it the liver that gets rid of the blood glucose from the blood?

Answer:
Glucose is the main source of energy that are cells need in order to be able to do their special functions. Food is made up of carbohydrates (glucose), fats (lipids) and protein (amino acids). When we eat the food gets broken down into the smallest molecules so that they can go through the intestines and be absorbed into the blood which then flows to the liver. When we eat, that is when the glucose is highest in the blood. In order for our cells to receive the glucose (energy source), the pancreas makes insulin. You could say that insulin is the key that unlocks the door to the living cell, so glucose can enter in. The cells will only take in as much glucose as it needs then. But, there may be "excess" glucose in the blood. The liver then takes this excess glucose and stores it as glycogen. When the cells need glucose and a person hasn't eatten anything for awhile to obtain more (like in between meals)...then the pancreas releases a hormone known as glucagon which signals the liver to convert the glycogen back into glucose and release it to the cells, through the blood. And of course, insulin has to then be released also, so the cells can receive it. So, your answer is really: both...the glucose energy is used by the cells to do their functions and the liver stores excess glucose from the blood until the cells need more. Best wishes I hope this helps you understand much better what is really taking place.

it's the cells in your body as they need it for respiration eg. glucose+oxygen=water+co2 however if you take insulin your liver will store more glucose to lower your blood sugar level
