In many ways water is a miracle liquid. It is essential to all living things (on this planet at least), and it is often referred to as the universal solvent, because many substances can be mixed with it. These unique properties of water result from the ways in which individual H2 O molecules interact with each other. Through chemical bonding a dipole forms across the water molecule. As a result of the polar covalent a bonding occurs between hydrogen and oxygen. Because the bonding electrons is shared unequally by the Hydrogen atoms , a partial negative charge (O-) forms at the oxygen end of the water molecules, and a partial positive charge (O+) forms at the hydrogen ends. Since the Hydrogen and Oxygen in the molecules carry opposite (though partial) charges nearby water molecules are attracted to each other like tiny little magnets. The electrostatic attraction in the O+ hydrogen and the O- oxygen in adjacent molecules is Hydrogen bonding.
