When trying to expand one's vocabulary is it best to study words with similar meaning or unrelated words?
-
It seems words with similar meaning have small nuances that would be lost if their grouped together. But remembering unrelated words doesn't provide a memory framework.

Answer:
Neither. When I was trying to learn new words, I would read a hard book and copy all the words I didn't know. Then I would look them up in a dictionary and write down their definitions. Maybe even the sentence they were in to help me remember where I got it from. I would also study word roots, and prefixes and suffixes, so you go from knowing one word to anything that looks like it. Flashcards help too. Maybe color code them into verbs, nouns, adverbs, and so on.

I like to learn words that are unrelated when possible. It seems to get confusing when words are very similar,or have similar meanings. When having to learn a list of words related to one topic, I like mix up the order of words. For me it helps me remember them better.

It would be nice if you added more detail about this question. What is your purpose for learning vocabulary? Are you learning these words in a second language?

It is difficult to know, by the way it is worded, precisely what you mean by your question. I will tell you, however, that one very good way to expand your vocabulary is also quite simplistic. Open your dictionary to a random page each morning...close your eyes and point to the page. Which ever word your finger has landed on, is your word for the day. Read the word, the pronunciation and the meaning.. then use that word as much as reasonably possible throughout your day. At the end of the day, write the word down and your idea of what it means WITHOUT looking it up again.
