What is the Shopglw payment method?

Is it acceptable to refuse payment if the payment method comes from an institution the seller doesn't like?

  • I was curious if it's legal for a person or business to refuse payment for something based on how they feel about the financial institution that provides the payment method. For example, if I'm selling my car, and I find a guy whose willing to pay me the money, but he wants to pay with a check from Chase bank. Lets say I don't like Chase bank, I don't like them so much I wont even take money from them. Would I be within my rights to cancel the deal based on the payment method? How about a business, lets say I own a store and a customer wants to pay with their Bank of America Card, but I don't want to do business with Bank of America (I don't like the look of their debt cards), can I refuse the transaction based on the financial institution?

  • Answer:

It is legal. Not very smart, but legal. As a seller, you are free to accept or reject any form of payment you like. If you want to limit your customer base and reduce your profit, go right ahead. If you were to tell me that you don't accept debit cards from the bank I do business with, rest assured you will never see me or my money again.
