How easy is it to get a job at Borders or Barnes and Noble?

I'm looking for a job this summer (college student) and want to work at a bookstore or some other retail store that's not clothes-related. How likely is it that I could walk into a store and apply for a job and get hired. It seems like these places are NEVER hiring...any ideas about how to get a job at one of these places?

the stores around our town are always hiring, rather it be for the cafe or the floor, just go to the front desk and ask for an application, some stores may have online applications you can fill out, be honest but sell yourself in your application, your chances of being hired are good
