  • I am sophomore in high school, and I have no idea what I want to be when I get older. I do know that I want to live Los Angeles, California, and for that, I will need a high-paying job to support myself, and my life style, but I have no idea what jobs would suit this. So if you have any ideas, just let me know!!!

    Anything that pays well without obscene amounts of luck require a lot of education, so be prepared for that before all else. And I don't know what the other poster was talking about with teaching. I live in Southern CA and teachers do not get paid enough to live comfortably here by any means. Something like 7 out of 10 of the best-paying and most stable jobs are a type of engineering. So civil, electrical, computer, structural, etc. Physicians are always paid well, but they also tend to work crazy hours- at least when they're starting out. The more specialized, the more school, but also the less crazy the hours and the better pay. Lawyers, CPAs, Actuarial Scientists, and technical sciences (chemist, computer, bio-tech, etc.) are the main high-paying white-collar jobs. Bottom line, though, is that there's no great career out there that pays well and anyone can do. The more you want to get paid, the longer and harder you'll have to train before you even start. doctor, laywer, are the norms. Teaching is high and you dont need to be overly qualified in the US

Attorney. Being a doctor doesn't pay as well as it should anymore and it's just going to get worse. Doctors make most of their money in things other than practicing medicine, like investments. Biglaw attorney in LA 1st year (right out of law school) = $160,000 + $20,000 bonus is common. By 7th year around $240,000 + $40,000 bonus if you have good billing hours. But you have to go to a great law school and get great grades to make it into biglaw. Doctors have to deal with people who have insurance (set rates) and those that don't (good luck getting paid). Attorneys can choose to deal with big corporations with lots of $$$ that need their butts saved. But really, you have to do what you love and the money will be there.
