How to cash a check with two payees?

• I just ended my apartment lease back in February. I finally received a check to cash from my apartment complex. Here is the problem the check has my name plus my ex roommates. the check uses the symbol & between my name and the others. Last year we moved into the apartment and the roommate left. I used my money for both the pet and security deposit, He left maybe two weeks after signing the lease that same day I asked my apartment complex to take his name off the lease, they claimed the were unable to. Well since he moved I never seen, heard or received any money to help pay for the apartment. I wanted to cash this 400+ check but I was told I need both signatures and both of us there. I can't get a hold of my ex roommate and since I have no idea where he lives I can't ask him to sign this check. I am also afraid of him claiming the money. I tried contacting the apartment complex they claim they can not just give me cash, nor send the check back and ask the company to just place my name on the new check. Is there any options or am I screwed out of the 400$ I should be getting back for my security deposit

  Since it's made out to both of you and has the & symbol... unfortunately, both of you do have to sign it. And since they won't redo the check... I don't know what you're going to be able to do.
