This is Amazingly an un-biased review, please read all of it before you start calling my a PS3 fanboy (I do crush it a little later). reasons why not to buy the 360: 1. Price -its an extra 400 dollars you might not want to spend -its then another 200 dollars for the HD-DVD player if you want that (not neccessary). -Then its 60 dollars a year (minimum) for Xbox live. -How big a hard drive did you want? 2. Reliability -In my personal experience I have seen at least 3 full out xbox 360 failures. a drive malfunction. and alot of red rings. (Honest to god that is the record I have seen). Why I like the PS3 better: 1.) it looks cooler or better in a media center (IMO) 2.) its controller is superior (rumble annoys me it doesn't "emerse me more in the game") 3.) You get the superior high def format (subject to opinion but the specs of blu-ray are superior). 4.) It has a 60 gig hard drive minimum now. 5.) its interface, while a little boring seems better organized and flows better than the 360's (I'm reminding everyone this is all IMO). 6.) both Cnet and PCworld editors think it upconverts DVDs better than the 360. (FACT you can look it up if you don't believe me). 7.)360 does not have an HDMI connection, at least not untill the Elite comes out). 8.) the 360 has an integrated web browser, which while shotty sometimes is not only better than nothing but is getting alot better with each update. 9.) PS3 supports various media formats and allows basically anything a media center would need plugged into it to be plugged into the USB ports. 10 (and last) Its 500 dollars, which is a better deal than the 360 if you look at all the components that you have to get to match the 360. What the 360 has which the PS3 doesn't: -More games have been released for the console, many users say the graphics are superior which in some cases they are. -I have seen soft shadows supported on the 360 but not on the PS3, which suggests that some version of Directx10 was put on the 360. PS3 was (most likely) designed on Directx 9 compatible hardware. thus far this has not been a limiting factor, and it almost certainly won't be in the future, however it does deserve mention. - 360 has more people using live, which has received great ratings almost around the board. -the 360 has rumble. -the 360 has been called easier to develop on due to the design of its hardware. many say even though the PS3 is a powerhouse, its useless to gaming. (remember you can asses this all yourself, I did). -The core console is cheaper than the PS3 by a substantial amount. now I know some of those facts don't apply to you however these questions are supposed to be for everyone to look up. Unbiased answer: Its really up to you, if you think its worth it to buy another console for titles you won't have a chance to play...at home at least...then go for it, your money, I'm not going to stop you, hell I might support the decision. My personal decision: I bought a PS3 after the price drop. Why?: -by the end of 2007 it will have tons of great titles out and you won't be thinking about anything 360 accept for that 7.1 channel SURROUND sound setup you have been looking at. (7.1 channel audio is not supported on the 360). -Will I miss Project Gotham Racing and Halo 3: no...why? because I have something called friends. Some of these people called "friends" own 360's, and when the titles which look like smash hits come out, I will spend at least a couple playing them when I go over. and I might find out, its not even worth spending all that money on the console and game. but you wouldn't have caught me buying a 360 after I researched, so you especially won't see me buying one after I bought the (IMO!!!) superior console. FINAL THOUGHT: If your looking for the best graphics, nothing will ever beat PC games, it just won't happen if things stay the way they are today. Source(s): Too many hours of me trembling over buying "the right" console

Xbox 360 for the most and best games along with the most enjoyable online play and a multitude of downloadable entertainment, some cost, some are free, free demos for almost every game that is out for it. PS3 for blueray which will replace dvd as the standard for disk based movies. It's 100times better than dvd if not more and will be around for years to come. It's got some games worth playing but not much and most of them are on the xbox 360 aswell. Online play is free for every game. You can also browse the internet with it and its alot more freely customizable than the 360. It depends on what your son will use the most. I don't play games by my self so i use the ps3 for internet and when i get a new tv it will be for blueray aswell. The xbox is the best to play games with people. As for noise and heat the xbox has a tendency to over heat and stop reading disk after a while but the ps3 is alot more solid and quiet. You can barely hear it and it never get's hot.

Xbox 360's are good but cost you money monthly to play online.. Ps3's are slightly slower online but is free. Xbox 360's are know for their common fault known as the RROD, (red ring of death). Ps3's are not as faulty. both consoles are HDMI... But as you mentioned the PS3 has its Blu-ray player... I was in the same position as you and went for the PS3... best console i have brought so far (touch wood) and its not got a bad internet browser either..

As a gamer, you really buy a console depending on what you what out of it. 1. Type of Games... each console (company) has rights to some games other systems don't, AKA exclusives. So if your son is into something like "Gears of War 2" then buying him a PS3 isn't a good option. While we are at games, most of the games on the market made by 3rd Party publishers (Publishers other then the companies that make the console) are going to work for both/all systems, its just a choice what you really what to play rather then what console you want, but as i said, its all about what you sun wants to play 2. Online... as you said, Xbox does have a better community and content online, but it all really boils down to this. Xbox Live subscription costs something like 40 GBP (i don't know whats that in dollars) a year and you need to get that for your son if he wants to play online, while PSN is free. Xbox live doesn't allow certain cards for content purchase while PSN offers a much wider range... Also Xbox works on something called Microsoft Points, you have to buy those before hand to buy something of the service, PSN is just card in hand and put in the numbers. In the end, you have to ask your son about his friends... What system do his friends have... if most of his friends have an Xbox 360, then he is most likely going to want to connect with his friends and play online... regardless of whether the online is any good... 3. Hardware... you mentioned blu-ray and while its all nice and dandy... you have to consider getting a HD-TV too see any difference in movie quality and trust me... its worth it for a movie fan... Another thing you have to consider is what also comes in the box... the Xbox 360 always had a few less features then the PS3, but the new system is far better as it has been improved over the years... (EDIT: If you constantly hear about the Xbox 360's "Ring of Death"...it referes to the console breaking all the time... but with the newer consoles that dont happen as much as the hardware is made diffrently) now the newer Elite's have 1080p HDMI (for high quality pictures), bigger hard disk for content and i believe it has built in Wi-Fi... with the PS3, i could tell you more in detail since i have one myself... PS3 has a hard disk like the one in your laptop, so you can upgrade your HDD from something like 40GB or 60GB up to 320GB technically... It has Blu-ray, built-in Wi-Fi and a wireless controller that has built in Alkaline Batters (rechargeable), unlike Xbox Controllers in which you have to constantly buy batteries unless you buy some rechargeable seperatley... IN THE END... you really have to ask your son what he really wants, since it's more likely that he would know about this then you yourself... HOWEVER if you what to keep it a secret, then i suggest you buy him the ELITE, since he does have original Xbox Games and with the new Elite (which has a Hard Drive required to play original games) he will be able to do so... As i said... i thing you should ask him.... but if you cant... then Xbox 360 Elite... Sorry about my written English... i have rubbish spelling and gamma EDIT: Blu-ray is not another Beta-Max fad... Sony won this time round over its competitor HD-DVD... you can always go on Wikipedia and find out for yourself..

Elite definatly I have one and the online gaming is soooo better then a PS3!!! And you can play Xbox games on the elite.
PS3!!! xbox is not better online at all. it has a few more players, but the ps3 has what the xbox has but more. the blu ray is amazing. trust me, get the ps3, you wont regret it

IMHO PS3 for reliability and the Blu Ray Player. The Sony Blu Ray player is top of the line from what I read when doing my research.

depends what game types and what other things u want to do with it for movie i would go for ps3 and fps games 360 for action/adventure ps3 but for platform games 360 but again depends what u want it for apart form games
well i feel that that u should get ps3 as it doubles as a media player , blu ray player, storage, etc. it also doubles up as a computer which is 40 times faster than a normal pc. but with linux not windows. though the 360 elite features great online cabalities due to windows live there are too many limitations and a premium memebership has to be paid for while on the other hand the PSN membership is completely free. the ps3 features a more powerful gpu & cpu than the xbox. though the x box has more ram it comes to no use while gaming
