Could someone help me? I'm thinking about buying a PSP...?
-
Im thinking about buying a PSP, and would like to know some basic details about it, preferably from an owner themselves. I want to know about the size and quality of it, and all about those umd's.... also what are some smart buys for like memory cards and stuff? What extras do I need for it? I am going to use the psp for videos, music (around 200 songs) and, of course, games. How much would a nice good setup with some games and all the accessories cost? Is it worth the money anyway?

I own one and am more than happy to tell you about it. You should know about the size and everything from store displays. They aren't that big, but not entirely small either. The screen is amazingly large for what it is and does have some pixels burn out, I had to replace mine a couple times. You're going to need a screen protector since it can get scratched, and you don't want that. So it'll be about $3-5 for that. Also, be sure to get a hard case, so there's another $15-20. You mentioned you wanted 200 songs and video on the card. You can't do that with the 32 meg that is included. You can with a sandisk 2 gig pro duo. I got mine for around $130. It works perfectly and I have a ton of songs and video on there and it's only 1/2 full. Some people gripe about the length of battery for the PSP, but unless you plan on sitting around for 8 hours at a time using it, I wouldn't worry. I have also heard rumors of the UMD cases breaking, but haven't experienced that myself at all. You only need to keep in mind that the PSP is a very delicate and fragile system, and it'll be fine. I would also recommend getting a replacement plan like they sell at Best Buy. I did and it worked great so I can exchange it within the next two years if pixels die or if it breaks or whatever. It was pretty expensive and I'm sad to see a lack of good games right now, but it is an awesome system and you'll like it. If you need any other answers or help putting media on your memory card, feel free to email me.

PSPs are amazing, but two things you might want to worry about are price and battery life. If you really need help, ask the assistant at your local video game store.

I don't own one, I'll admit. Buuut. Honestly, for the price, I just can't justify owning one at this point. The UMDs, while cool, just seem like they're destined to go out of style sooner than later. And I hear the battery life isnt too good either. Plus, I have yet to see any games that really look absolutly must-have. If its music and movies you want mostly, and you dont mind spending the money, a video Ipod is a much much better investment. No games, true. And an IPod isn't exactly battery friendly with video either. I guess, in the end, if you can justify spending the money for a PSP and you can get your value from it in games that you like and being able to play music and UMDs, go for it.

Well PSP's are pretty good but there are other options with a less price but still carry out the main purpose of a game system, play games!!

The quality is very good. At the new price point of $199 it's really a bargain. I wouldn't buy movie UMD's because the only place to play them is on a PSP and that's it. You will need a few things if you buy a PSP... Better ear-phones. The original ones are ok, but if you get some really good ones for about $50 it makes all the difference. A screen protector. You can buy an entire case but it just gets too bulky, you're better off buying one of the ones offered at Best Buy, they're just a clear, kinda thick piece of plastic that sticks to your psp. It's removable and washable. But best of all, it's like not having anything on your PSP but it does a great job to protect your device! If you wanna store music and movies you rip from your DVD's then you need a bigger memory card than the 32 megs you get. Go for 1 Gigabyte if you wana see movies...i can store 2.5 movies on one gigabyte. Also, you will need a program called CloneDVD Mobile. It'll very easily get movies onto your memory card!! GREAT program. Finaly, so far, except for Hot Shot's Golf, I haven't really found any games that are great for the PSP. If you don't really need it, don't buy it yet. Wait for some cool games to come out for it. But if you are gonna use it to see movies and listen to music, then by all means it's a great device!
