How do you make glass beads??

  • Hi I am interested in making my own beads but don't know where to start. A search of the Internet didn't come up with any answers- but I need help in searching- so can anyone tell me of a website which instructs people how to make glass beads, or does anyone on here know how to help me Which tools do I need and where do I buy them from? I AM IN THE UK.

    look for a glass shop that offers classes in beadwork. what you need to find is a Beginning Lampwork Torch Kit which has everything you need to get started. These tend to run around 99-100 dollars or more. But it would help to take a class so you know what you are doing.

As well as the previous very good answers, there are plenty of demonstrations on youtube. Good luck - it looks like a wonderful activity. Please think of joining the Bead Society of Great Britain - it will give you links to the bead world (Europe's biggest bead fair will be on Sunday 7 October in Harrow, north-west London, with demonstrations of lampworked beadmaking and other wonderful things).

I'm not sure if they sell it in the UK, but you may be able to get it online. A store here called Crafts 2000 has a kit where you can blow your own glass beads. It was $100 here in the US. I'm almost positive they have a website. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

My boss makes lampwork beads and had many conversations about the process. It sounds like it's very difficult. And there are certain technical issues to learn to ensure the integrity of the glass. I find it hard to believe that it would be something you could learn on your own from a book or website. I think it would be best learned from a skilled artist. In addition, I think there's more to the equipment than just the torch, rods and glass. So you might have to go to a glass studio to do the work.
