Is resin stronger than plastic?

How to get resin out of a plastic mold that kind of melted?(stuck)?

  • is there a way to get the easy cast resin out of the plastic mold. i accidentally got my oven too hot and it melted the mold just a bit and caused it to look slightly deformed.. and now the resin is cured and i cannot get the resin pieces out. does anyone know how? unfortunately i did not use a mold release spraay.. im not even sure if that would have worked because i am affraid that the resin and plastic have melted together. but i think that there may still be a way to get the resin out of the mold. does anyone have any ideas? (without ruining the pieces)

  • Answer:

First, not sure why you were using an *oven*. Easy Cast (like regular epoxy resins, and even like polyester resins) creates its own heat for curing once the two parts are mixed together, and isn't put in an oven. That extra heat might have been the problem, but also resins must be used only in certain types of molds (unless a mold release is used). The most common molds "sold for resin" are made from HDPE plastics (or you could use things like Rubbermaid or Tupperware containers if you didn't need something small). Other kinds of plastic molds are usually not advised. Silicone molds can also be used. (All molds must have no scratching though, even tiny, if you want the smoothest clearest result on the surface of the resin... so don't even wipe them to dry, just air dry). Epoxy resins (including the tweaked one called Easy Cast) are also a bit more adhesive than polyester casting resins (Castin Craft Clear Polyester Casting Resin is the most common brand). You can try cooling the resin and mold in the freezer awhile then try to separate them, but otherwise you'll just have to destroy the mold (and know better next time). There's loads of info, if you're interested on clear craft resins (epoxies and polyesters), including using them in molds when that's advisable, etc., on this page of my site: http://glassattic.com/polymer/other_materials.htm HTH, Diane B.
