  • Answer:

I just finished a diaper cake today; in fact, I'll put a pic up as my avatar for a few days of it. (Unfortunately, I couldn't fit much of the cake into the picture after the crop). I found the following links with instructions for making a castle diaper cake: http://www.creative-baby-shower-ideas.com/princess-diaper-cake.html (scroll down for detailed instructions) http://craftsandfoodbylisa.blogspot.com/2009/02/diaper-castle-cake.html The second one gives step-by-step instructions with photos, but I don't like the way she did the diapers as much as the way they were done in the photo you shared. To make one as shown in your photo, I would recommend starting with a square box with a lid centered on a square piece of cardboard at least twice the size of your box. (The cardboard can be painted or wrapped with wrapping paper). The depth of the box should just about equal the length of whatever sized rolled diaper you're planning to use, when it is rolled up and standing on end. (I'd probably go with a size 3) Roll your diapers from the open end towards the closed, to the inside, as in the instructions at the second link for the towers. Secure each diaper around the middle with a thin 2-inch rubber band. Fill your box with small gifts for the baby, and put the lid on. Take a 7-inch rubber band (available at some craft stores, but easier to find at office supply stores, like Office Depot) and fit it around the box. Pull the rubber band out and stick one row of diapers between the box and band all the way around. Put another 7-inch rubber band around the box with diapers, and fit in one more row of rolled diapers all the way around. This will be your base, and you can build up from there, using a smaller box. Try to find one that's 2 to 3 inches smaller all the way around than your base. When you're finished with the castle structure, you can cover the rubber bands in the middle with a decorative ribbon going all the way around and secured in back. The rest of the instructions (for the towers, etc.) are included in the links I provided. Try not to use hot glue on the castle (at least not on any parts that will be touching the diapers). You want your friend to be able to disassemble it when her baby is ready for the size of diapers you use. Hot glue will render some diapers unusable. Permanent double sided tape (comes in a roll just like ordinary Scotch tape) works just as well to secure ribbons, etc. Although it's labeled "permanent," the things you use it on come apart easily when pulled, and are still usable. Also, I wouldn't try to permanently secure the individual sections of the castle together. They'll hold up fine just stacked on top of one another, or you could add a small piece of double-sided tape for stability. If you use bibs, pacifiers, onesies, etc. to stuff the boxes, you want your friend to be able to get to the goodies without destroying the castle so she can enjoy it for awhile. Happy crafting!
