Where can I find organic powdered dye?

Where can I find fabric dye for tie dying NOT online? I have checked Target and they do not carry it.?

  • I am trying to do a simple tie dye project and can not find any fabric dye at wal-mart or target. There are kits but they only dye small garmets and do not have the right colors. I do not want to order online so please any ideas of craft stores or places near would be nice. Thank you

  • Answer:

Rit and Tintex are the two commonly available dyes, and they really aren't very good dyes. I'd suggest that what you probably want is Procion MX or Dylon dyes, and they're a little hard to come by -- you may find them at hobby shops or large fabric stores. Personally, I do mail order my dyes and inks... the company I use is Dharma Trading at http://www.dharmatrading.com I'd suggest you spend some time on their very informative website, even if you choose not to buy through them.... there's a lot of good stuff there free for the learning.

You buy Ritz dye usually in the housewares department of a store. You could also probably pick it up at a craft store such as Michael's or AC Moore.

I have purchased RIT Whitener & Brightener at Walmart and they carry the RIT dyes also. Beverley's also sells RIT dye in their craft section.

Joann's Micheal's AC Moore Hobby Lobby depends on your area but any craft store should have it. I know you said Walmart didn't but check carefully because sometimes they have items on odd shelves and lower shelves because they don't sell as well - sort of hidden and maybe it's a matter of reading bottles that have multi use such as acrylic paints as well as fabric paints sometimes you need a "medium" that makes a paint useful for tie dying and using on fabrics.

Handcock Fabrics is another one. I would re-check Walmart...Seems to me that the big boys wouldnt let that market get by them. And as far as ordering online....I might suggest you have a change of heart...and do just that. Call it an experiment. and for a couple of dollars dear...I'll order online for ya. Good luck....cj

Have you tried a grocery store or an arts and crafts supply store? Depending on where you live, try Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

Walmart should carry it. Mine does. You might have to ask an employee for help.
