Doxycycline Anti-Malaria Tablets Side Effects .....?

• Okay, so next thursday i'm going to to the Dominican republic with my friend and her family and the doctors have advised i take malaria tablets just in case and has prescribed me some. My friend and I have different malaria tablets. She has some where she has to take them once every week and i have to take them everyday :( Mine say to keep out of sunlight and sunlamps... which i don't see how i'm going to do when i'm on holiday but annnyway.... I know everyone reacts differently, but what side effects should i be expecting and will it ruin my holiday? Thanks

  While taking doxycycline, you will need to expect photosensitivity; therefore, you should avoid exposure to direct sunlight because you will have exaggerated sunburns, rashes, and possible nail changes. You will want to wear sunscreen on your vacation up until two days after you stop the medication. Additionally, you must be aware that sunscreen only provides minimal protection, so your best bet would be to stay out of the sun. Also, doxycycline can upset your stomach, so you should take it with food to help alleviate that. I'm not sure which anti-malarial medicaion your friend is taking, but if it is hydroxychloroquine, which is usually dosed once weekly for malaria prophylaxis, there are several side effects to that medication as well. Some vision changes are possible (usually with prolonged use, but as can occur as early as three weeks after start of therapy), itching, and rash. GI upset may also occur with this medication, so your friend may way to take it with food. It is possible that hydroxychloroquine may also cause photosensitivity; therefore, your friend should also remain out of direct sunlight and wear sunscreen. Hope this helps. Have fun on your trip!
