I really want to be a nurse.

To the nurses or anyone in the health care field....Im 20yrs old and I really want to be a nurse it's just

  • that it seems like Im trying to enjoy my young years instead of going to college right now..But I plan on enrolling in the spring. What steps do I need to take to become a nurse should I do LPN first and see how I like it and then advance to a RN..I also would like to know what is the most some nurses make..One nurse told me she had been nursing for 15yrs and makes 100 dollars an hr is that possible?

    The advantage to getting your LPN first is that after a year of school you can earn better money than you would from most other jobs while you are continuing your schooling. Many community colleges offer a ladder or step program where you go through a specialized LPN training and get your certificate. This enables you to take the state boards then the next year you will automaatically be a second year RN student. If you enter one of these programs it will help you decide if you like nursing enough to continue and you won't have wasted that first year if you decide not to continue. An LPN can earn as much as 40,000 dollars a year depending on the area of the country. An RN can earn twice as much or more depending on her level of education. It may be possible to earn 100 dollars an hour in the short term working for an agency that will send you out on very hard cases or to institutions that have very difficult working environments but it would be very rare. Many RNs in big city hospitals can earn 40 dollars an hour working in specialty units. Whatever you decide,if you become a nurse you will always be able to find a job,anywhere you choose to live. I graduate in December and once I pass my boards I will be an RN. The waiting lists to get into nursing programs in my area are two years or longer so what I choose to do was take a 6 week CNA course and I worked on a medical surgical floor for two years before starting school. It really helped me to decide if nursing was the career that I wanted and for a 6 week course you make ok money as a CNA. I was at $12.00 an hour when I left for an internship. I will be starting somewhere around $28 per hour when I graduate. Hope that helps and good luck.

Although that is high, it is possible. After ten years of experience and knowing the hospitals in the area, you can find it. I know a fellow RN who makes $1000 a day. I'm serious! It's in a small community hospital who is in dire need of an experienced critical care nurse. They do a lot of heart procedures and she is the only one in the area who is experienced in that procedure.
