I have a genetic high blood pressure , can Yoga or Meditation help?
-
I am a Fruitarian-Rawfoodist and by my diet after 2 years I was able to drop the blood pressure to 100/60 with the help of 2 blood pressure medications,. It was so low that my Doctor asked me to get off medications until it comes back to normal then resume the meds. I don't want to resume my BP medications. It has been 10 days and my BP is back to 130/90 (average). I am 46 , 153 for 6.2. My bP is food sensitive(that's why I am a strict Rawfoodist) but is also partially genetic. Can Yoga help me controlling this blood pressure. ?? I purchased a mat and 2 blocks. I am also open to meditation if necessary. Thanks.

I am in a similar situation. I exercise and practice yoga and meditation everyday, but still I am on a BP med. It is clearly genetic in my case. On the other hand, my diet is not as pure as yours. I eat a lot of raw veggies and fruits but still have a small share of food that is not so healthy. I was vegetarian for over 20 years but developed anemia related to vitamin B12 deficiency. So now I eat fish or chicken about 3-4 days a week. Going from your 100/60 to 130/90 in only ten days without your meds is, in my opinion, quite a significant jump. The second figure of 90 is considered borderline hypertension. Anyone on YA can offer an opinion, but at this point it is just an opinion. To be honest, I don't know if (or how much) yoga and meditation can improve your BP. In theory, these practices can lower your BP, but the results probably differ from one individual to another. I suggest a month or so of yoga and meditation while closely monitoring your BP. If your BP continues to rise, you might be healthier going back on the meds. Perhaps with yoga and meditation, your dosage of meds can be minimal. By the way, I hope you are not making an evil judgment about allopathic medicine. In my opinion, there is a time and place for everything, including prescription meds. Namaste !!

You could consider the herbal approach. Have you tried anything herbal? There are quite a few herbs and health supplements known to help lower blood pressure, such as : Hawthorn berries extract, Garlic, Fish oil (Omega 3), Vitamin E and Linden (Lime) flower extract. It would be beneficial for your health to take Garlic extract and Omega 3 anyway. If you are on blood thinning medication talk to your doctor first however as both of these can thin the blood, which is a positive factor too if not on such medication. I would thus take garlic capsules and you can be odourless garlic capsules from Holland & Barratt. I would also supplement with Fish oil capsules of a fairly high strength. If you are vegetarian you can take Flaxseed oil capsules instead. I would also take Vitamin E too....200iu to start with but you can increase this to 400iu. Monitor your blood pressure on these supplements and if it still has not dropped low enough then consider either Hawthorn extract or Linden flower extract in addition to the garlic, fish oil and vitamin E. The former (Hawthorn extract) might be easier to find in health shops. Avoid licorice and other sweets containing licorice extract as this can raise blood pressure. I am assuming as a 'rawfoodist' you limit your salt intake anyway...salt being a condiment that can raise blood pressure. I do believe meditation could help with lowering your blood pressure naturally. Yoga may help too but you have to be careful with some asanas....avoid the inversion ones. I am sorry to hear that, but I am in the same situation as you are. Yoga, diet etc keep your pressure under control to a certain degree, but without medication you take a big risk of your life. So take medication while engaged in your yoga.

Yoga may help keep your BP under control, but I think you should take the medication since hypertension is genetic.
