How much would a waitress in Manhattan make?

Do people realize that waitress's only make 3.15 an hour?

  • As a waitress, I find it a big pet peeve when people say "I usually dont tip because they are getting paid anyways" or whatever. I always make sure to correct them, but was thinking this may be a reason some people go cheap on the tips (even with great service). What about you? Are you aware that waitress's don't make minimum wage? If not, now you know why tipping is so important:)

  • Answer:

i just wanted to add something to the people saying that you need a new job because minimum wage is higher: the minimum wage you are used to is for jobs that do not receive tips, there is a separate minimum wage for jobs that include tips, such as servers. i've never been a server, but i have worked in restaurants (i went to restaurant management school) and I know it sucks when people get shorted. I always tip well... and usually leave something extra if someone else pays because I don't know how much they tipped. also, most servers are taxed on around 15 percent of their total sales, whether or not they actually get tipped that much... so if you don't tip, the server is actually losing money. good luck in school!!!!

Minimum wage doesn't apply to industries where the worker earns a tip ladies and gentleman. At one of my jobs I made 4 dollars an hour and once my tips were counted up I would actually had made more if I stayed working at McDonalds.

Yes. I always try to leave as much as I can. My husband to be will leave almost 10 dollars sometimes more. The only time I have ever tipped bad we had this one waitress once that we had to ask for everything [napkins, silverware, drinks, our food] and we still leave a tip but not the type of tip she would have had she just paid attention to us. but yes I for one always knew waitress's only make that much. & I also try to tell everyone I know when I'm out eating with them.. Good luck in school!! EDIT: To the person who said you can't afford to eat out AND TIP then FREAKIN EAT AT HOME AND QUITE BEING CHEAP!!!!!

I'm very aware because my sister has been a waitress for 15 years, and I know they depend on tips.

oh my god i know right. people don't even realize (stereotypically teenagers or really cheap people) that waitresses make all their money in tips. Honestly, nobody can live on 3.15 an hour, and if your not going to give a decent tip for good service, then your wasting my time, i could be waiting on somebody who will reward me.

I am so sorry people are so rude, and it is a shame food service has to rely on tips so much for their income. I really hate people that include the fact you could have gotten another, higher paying job. Ok, by that logic, every person in food service industry should have gotten a better paying job and there would be no more restaurants. I also think it sucks that you might have to spend the same amount of time on a customer who is spending very little as one that spends a bit more, but are tipped on the amount they spent, not the amount of work that goes into serving them. BTW, I never tip less than 20%, but often much more if the service is wonderful.

I have always said waitressing is not only the lowest paying job, but the worst. People just suck at times, and they can be so very mean and rude. Yes, I know that waitresses only make a small wage, and I always tip accordingly. And I believe people know that waitresses don't make much of a wage, but they want a reason for not leaving a tip so they say whatever will make themselves feel better.

I totally understand that waitresses don't make much money and I tip - really well. But the wait staff need to realize that they are percieved as "doing their job" when all they do is the bare minimum. But if they go out of their way to be friendly, to check my drink levels, to ask if I would like dessert (instead of just putting the check down), I will tip. Once, my husband and I tipped 100% of the bill because the waiter was so awesome (and because our bill was only $10). But a waiter/waitress can't expect to throw a 'tude my way and still expect me to shell out big bucks. Help me to enjoy my dining experience and I'll kick down 15-25%.
