Why do you bite your tongue?

Is it better to "let it out" or to "bite your tongue"?

  • Today, at a store, my credit card was refused because they had a "minimum purchase" limit, and I was under it. According to the Visa website, merchants CANNOT establish such limits. I was upset, and I told the lady they have to take my card. They continued (supervisor and cashier now) to refuse, saying they are "only doing as they've been told." I said, "Well, you were told WRONG!" After finally completing my purchase by writing a check, the cashier asked for my driver's license, and I said, I'd have to go to my car for that (I only take into the store what's NEEDED). She then rudely and abruptly said to me, "Well, FORGET it! I'm HAD enough of YOU!" I was certainly upset with this incident, I was not rude. I bit my tongue, gathered my purchase, and left the store. I was correct in this situation, and treated rudely when I got upset at the unlawful refusal. Sooooo... is it better to "let it out" or to "bite your tongue"? Have you had similar experiences?

Wow ... that's quite a story. I've had a few "run-ins" with store clerks before, but never anything nearly that bad. Most store clerks aren't like the one you met, of course, but some are -- and it happens because too many customers just put up with it. I would have tried to remain as calm as possible ("tried" is the operative word there) and sought out the manager. I would also report this store to Visa, if you haven't done so already. If they're authorized to accept Visa, but they're not playing by Visa's rules, then for the sake of the public, they need to be informed. Sorry that this happened to you. .

That minimum purchase thing drives me nuts!! So many stores think that they can establish minimum purchases as a ploy so that they can save transaction fees and we'll buy at least the minimum purchase. I'm sorry, but a transaction fee is part of the downfall of owning a company. The transaction fee is an expense the store has to accept if it wants to use cards. I would rather stores put a 15 cent charge onto my purchase than make me do a minimum payment. You've really got me on a rant here...that's been bugging me for a while. I certainly would not have started writing up a cheque, I would have went somewhere else. I've worked in retail and the driver's license is required to verify cheques. However, cheques under 20$ did not need to be verified and are just counted at the end of the day (that was my old store rules). So, since you were under the "minimum purchase limit" I'm sure you were also probably under 20$, so the license would have been useless. I didn't know about the minimum payment rules, but here's a really interesting article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13806200/ I guess stores aren't even allowed to ask for ID when doing credit card payments. This is really interesting. And those people who write "see ID" on the back of their cards have actually voided their cards because "see ID" isn't a signature. Anyways, it doesn't seem like you were in the wrong here. You really just wanted to pay for you stuff and get out. I would never deal with this store again. The cashier actually kicked you out of the store? That's obscene, I've worked retail, but I've never kick some one out of the store. It is perfectly reasonable for you to not walk around with your driver's license on you (unless you're buying alcohol). It was better for you to just bite your tongue. I do feel for the cashier, because we have so many stupid rules and we have to abide by them. The cashier was doing as she was told, and unfortunately, as a cashier, you do have to defend these rules. You wouldn't have helped the situation if you made a scene. I strongly recommend that you fill out an evaluation form, or telephone the store manager/owner. They should be aware of this. If it was the manager's choice to implement a "minimum purchase" then the store manager may not realize that he is in the wrong for doing that. If it was company choice to do the minimum purchase, then the manager will contact the head office regarding this. My most recent problem grocery shopping was this cashier. She didn't bag my milk. So I asked if she could double bag my milk. She actually replied, "What do you need two bags for, it has a handle, it's a 4 liter jug?!". I replied, "I'm sorry, I actually have to take my milk on a 30 minute walk home." She scoffs at me then triple bags my milk and ALL of the rest of my groceries. She triple bagged a loaf of bread!! It's not like I throw out my shopping bags, I use them for cat litter and bin-liners. AND most of the time I carry a cloth bag for groceries. I just avoid this cashier. I watched her mouth off another customer, so it's just not worth my time to deal with her (unfortunately I cannot switch safeways...I don't have a car so my options are limited)

some people are asses, and will usually remain asses whether you bite your tongue or bite their ***..it takes alot of control to bite the bullet, you show yourself to be a better person (obvious) and it keeps you out of trouble..beleive me you would end up on the wrong end of the deal (right or wrong) if you would have let em have it..i respect you for respecting yourself.....an idiot is an idiot..realize it the moment your placed in that situation and it kinda becomes comical watching them act like idiots..you can even have alittle (not much) fun with it ..lead em around like a dog on a leash.. sorry got carried away...you did good.

No, it hasn't happened to me but if it did, I would have walked out without buying a thing. Left it sitting right there while I waited for her supervisor or the number to contact that person. I also would have called Visa from my cell in the store and reported what the establishment was pulling. That would have gotten them in a bind w/Visa, who is not obligated to deal with them at all. After that call and the supervisor, I would have left...w/out purchasing. Businesses like that are off their rockers to think they don't have to follow laws or other regs. and for those people that act the way that cashier did...they don't even deserve employment. From that trailer like behavior of hers, sounds like you were in a 99 cent store.

When you bite-your-tongue, you never have anything to regret. Contact the credit card company. They should be aware that you were not allowed to use their card in that establishment. I have had clerks be rude for no apparent reason .. it seems is is happening everywhere, and all the time. What these stores, and clerks, don't realize -- is "who" makes the jobs possible for them.

I congratulate you on holding your tongue. I've found that you are pretty much NEVER going to get anywhere talking with a clerk. It's best to pick your battles. Write a letter to the manager of that thrift store and send a copy of the letter to the next level management (if it's a chain with a headquarters). Make your problem widely known. I like your idea of contacting your bank and/or the credit card company.

If the cashier had been that rude to me I would have told the mgr and I would also find out who actually owns the store and Tell them as well because too few people just get fed up and never go back and they really should let someone know. I used to do that whenever I had a similar problem and I got good results. Also gives you a feeling of vindication and empowerment.

I would first let it out, then don't buy anything from there store, and go to another store, maybe one that's near the first one so they could see you go in. that would be funny.

In your circumstance, let it out. You were in the right and now you've left the store upset and stewing on it. At least if you said your part, you would at least be venting somewhat and would have gotten it off your chest. They are relying on your business so make sure you don't go back there - and tell as many of your friends, family and contacts not to shop there.

You are paying for a service. She is working in the service industry. Even though etiquette says you should have bit your tongue I would have asked to speak to a manager simply because she WILL do this to another customer and then another and then another. She was rude and wrong. You did much better than I would have I am afraid. And I am usually the queen of etiquette!! A star for you!!!
