Why do Christians believe in a kind God?

What sort of God do "liberal Christians" believe in?

• note: "Liberal Christian" here is NOT referring to political ideology, nor the mainstream Christians that accept evolution . I mean as in John Dominic Crossan, the Jesus Scholar who thinks Jesus was never the Jewish messiah, never performed miracles, didn't come to "atone" for anything, but was an illiterate cynical wisdom teacher for socialism/ hippy stuff, akin to ghandi or something. Crossan clearly states he believes in God though. what kind of God would these liberal Christians believe in. A Deist one?? a Universalist one?? it certainly isn't the Old Testament Yahweh either.

  I suppose I'm a liberal Christian compared to most here, but I have some doubts as to whether JD Crossan could even be considered a Christian in the orthodox sense of the word. I do not think he is representative of 'liberal' christians, who accept the doctrine of the Trinity and the Incarnation.
