Why do people assume that they know about Muslim culture?

  • The general consensus is that Muslims are some sort of backward cave dwellers without a clue on how to conduct themselves. For example; with regards to the women and the way they dress, a lot of them dress like that because they don’t want to be seen as a sex object, it’s hardly ever the men that enforce it, and they do this because of the bad impression that western media portraits women. In general they hate western culture; it’s hard wired into their system because we are over there BOMBING them so they don’t want to be seen to be like us and the men don’t want it in their women. They’re culture isn’t perfect but what exactly is it about ours do you think they should aspire to? Pushing the world ever closer to an ecological disaster because of a lust for consumerism? Discrimination? Kids shooting up schools. I could go on. If you havn't been to a muslim country or lived with them i suggest you STFU because you don't know what your talking about.

    In the western culture, terrorism is synonymous with Islam and Muslims. Disgruntled, radical Muslims using violence is terrorism (it really is), but elected governments waging senseless wars leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocents is righteous crusade. For some obscure reason, they also represent and speak for Muslim women around the world. Is it that hard to understand that Muslim women are disgusted by how women in the west generally dress and behave? Muslims don't want to be like them. They think Muslims are primitive and uncivilized because they don't walk around half-naked and don't generally engage in shameful behavior. The Chinese used to think their country was in the center of the world, and that all outsiders were barbarians. They didn't bother to open their eyes, give up their irrational pride, and look at others before looking at them down their noses. That's what westerners do these days. Muslims are proud of their religion, and we don't change our religion to appease others. Let others think what they will. As far as I know, Muslims don't care what others think, it is unimportant.

Do you normally see everyday human rights in these Muslim countries? And like somebody said, they aren't throwing out new technologies out of these countries. Which is a complete shame, considering how powerful and technologically advanced they were in the past. I would much rather live in the Islamic Caliphate than Christian Europe back then. ...Too bad the past countries part of the long gone caliphate decided to stay back in those days... Hmm, I wonder. If the Ottoman Empire was still around, do you think they would be up to par with the rest of the world? An interesting thought. I'm just rambling :P

perhaps it has something to do with that hatred for the western culture you are speaking of...hatred that includes blowing up buildings, bombing buses, running airplanes into huge buildings killing thousands, and their qu'ran which says that they are supposed to rid the world of the infidels who don't want to be muslim. ps. i used to live in the middle east...for two years.

I have lived in a few muslim countries, and in my opinion islam is the most primitive religion on the planet. The fact that muslims do not agree counts for nothing to me. The fact that muslim women have silly rationalizations for their being treated as slaves does not make it any less primitive. The fact that all international terrorists in the world today is not the the major reason that people think so little of islam, but it does not help your cause.

Yeah, stop talking about how we force our women to wear clothing many of them don't want to wear. They like it, really, just don't ask them but instead take my word for it. Seriously? Look buddy, I'm going to make this crystal clear to you. People can wear what they want, but don't think we're stupid enough to not realize the immense social stigma against women who refuse to conform to the veil. The expectation that you must wear it is what is wrong, not people's private choices.

I've heard many Muslim's defend their culture and denounce the negative sterotypes we know and love in the west. Unfortuantely, Muslim's give us EVERY reason to continue supporting those stereotypes. I don't care what Muslim women wear. I only care that they have the right to choose: a right women DO NOT have in many Middle Eastern countries. I don't mind that Muslim's have their own religious beliefs. However, I do mind when they THREATEN myself and many others with death for speaking our minds. Don't ignore these issues. They matter.

well that depends on how you define muslim culture. with sharia law one would simply read thw qu'ran or even look at saudi arabia/iran's state laws, whereas western muslim culture is practically the same as christian culture - not really religious in nature at all and only self proclaimed

No idea -_- Once i had an argument with this very odd athiest. for some UNKOWN reason she would always think she knows more about my religion than me. I talked to her for 2 days explaining everything and she would just use the same arguments on me T_T I swear talking to those kinds of people is just a waste of time. Edit** Ok any of the people above me or maybe below me that think islam is sexist or violent, i bet you got all your info from hate sites. People on hate sites are not muslim they dont know anything.
