What is an earthquake?

Where to hide/what to do during an earthquake?

  • so as most of you know there was a 5.6 earthquake in the bay area yesterday and people were saying that there's a great possibility of another bigger earthquake coming in the next week or so. I was just wondering, where is the safest place to go during an earthquake? What should you do if a really big one comes? And what if you were trapped under your house? my school is right on the hayward fault and I also live on it, so I'm pretty scared about the BIG earthquake that supposedly is coming soon...

  • Answer:

Here's a website about Earthquake safety. It includes what to do during a quake and what to do after (click the more button at the bottom of the page). I hope this helps!

INDOORS Stay inside DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON! Take cover under and hold onto a piece of heavy furniture or stand against an inside wall. Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you're sure it's safe to exit. Stay away from windows and doors. OUTDOORS Find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop to the ground until the shaking stops

Your best bet is to get out in the open with no buldings around. The worst thing to do is to stay home especially during a big one because you can never be to sure and don't go into your basement because you can get trapped down there in the worst case because if you have no food down there and you are trapped for a while it will be very anxious and not to mention hungry so prepare just in case. It 's better to be safe than sorry

First of all, the next one is not coming "next week or so...." It could be anytime from now to 30 years!! It could be 6.5 or more but not like 8 or something. Hayward fault can't produce more than 7.1 When an earthquake strikes don't run outside till the sh~~ak~~ing stops, cover yourself under a wooden table or a mattress or stand under a door frame whichever is nearest. You need to move to some other area or may be different city, if you are that worried. I am seriously thinking of moving back to east coast.

actually you stand in a doorway...its the safest place to be try not to be outside ...which sounds silly because you never know when they will strike..but get to a door way try to stay away from any furniture that will block your way out of the house or building..stay away from electrical lines as well

You should go to an open place such as a field Supposedly you're safe if you stand underneath a doorway And if you're trapped underneath your house, you'll just have to hope for the best. I don't think you're house will collapse though unless it's made out of brick or tile
