the position of the moon, relative to the earth. the gravitational pull can be strong or week, but it is when the moon's pull is strongest that spring tides form, and at its weakest that neap tides form. because of it's orbit around the earth, there are strong tidal variants around the equator, though very little tidal differances at the poles.
