  • Answer:

Here's a short and simple page that covers oil and coal in layman's terms: http://www.sjgs.com/oil.html Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rocks, but on rare occaision there can be a few in metamorphic rocks that did not alter in a way that totally destroted any fossils in the original rock. How common fossils are in a sedimentary rock depends on a huge number of factors; it can be completely made from well preserved fossils, or have none at all. Usually they at least have microscopic fossils like pollen or conodonts though.

Other answers

Fossils fuels (oil and gas) come from mainly marine plants and animals. Coal comes from trees. All died millions of years ago in marine or swampy conditions where they could be easily buried under sediment. Try a google on "oil bearing rock", or "how is coal formed"
