What do you think causes ice ages?

What do you think causes ice ages? Most of you will probably say the tilt of the Earth on it's axis, I think that that is the reason also. As the Earth tilts one way, we move closer to the Sun, which is the process we are in right now, which is why I don't believe in Global Warming (LET ALONE AL GORE). And then every million, or 10,000 years, or whatever it is, we move farther away from the Sun. That is what I think cause ICE AGES. This is a very real subject, what do you think will happen in the next few hundred years?

Answer:
There are four causes for ice-ages...all have to occur at the same time, some have very long periods, others are short (geologically speaking) They are called the Milankovitch Forces after Milutin Milankovitch. 1. Axial tilt 2. The Earth's "wobble" as it spins on its' axis 3. The Earth's position on the elliptical orbit around the Sun 4. A majority of the Earth's continental crust being in close proximity to either of the poles. (Obviously now the Northern Hemisphere) Currently we are in an inter-glacial period (between ice ages)

The ice ages are caused by too much ice! It can pile one mile high and move into a neighborhood near you if you live in the upper half of the USA. Likely it is caused by a synergy of several factors including climate changes that bring on more climate change. If the ocean level goes down while ice accumulates near the poles, the earth's rotation should speed up (like a skater pulling in her arms?) affecting the lengths of day/night and heat radiation to space. The earth's tilt may change like fussing with a toy gyroscope. The cloud cover may change reflecting more or less energy into space at different sites of earth. Ocean currents and winds may change the rate of heat movements on earth. Real estate values likely will not plummet within the next few hundred years, but why take chances? Avoid the North and South polar regions and ocean-front property which may move inland. Get a very good thermometer to be the first to know when the next ice age arrives.

many posibilities .the dust cloud of a crashed meteor ,if it is big enough. a shift in the earths crust or a severe temperature drop for some reason or other ,that cause storm clouds that block the sun long enough to set the icing process working an Atomic war could do it i am sure there are other reasons

Super Volcanic eruption?

The precession of the earths axis and rotation is a slow process. The rise in the earths temperature we have witnessed over the past 100 years has been fast. There is no doubt that global warming is occurring substantially due to man's activities.

The Earth's tilted axis points alternately towards the Sun and away from it once every year, so that can have no effect. Conservation of orbital angular momentum means that we cannot move measurably nearer to the Sun or farther from it, except once a year due to our orbital eccentricity, so that can have no effect either. Passing through a region of galactic dust could reduce the solar energy reaching us. Some authors blame this for the most recent ice ages. Massive volcanic activity cannot affect the overall energy balance unless it changed the atmosphere to reflect more solar energy back into space and lose it. The energy not reflected is by definition absorbed, so it must end up reaching the earth somehow or other.

I saw a documentary on PBS that concluded that the eruption of a "SUPER" Volcano causes Ice Ages. See the following website for more details.
