Why do we have seasons?

Why are the seasons, fall and spring are alike?

  • i need help with this question...i don't get it....why are the seasons, fall and spring alike. i did a lab on seasons.....i had to measure the sun's diameter in a specific season. fall and spring have the same diameter, why???? i need that answer for my lab questions...i don't get it...plz tell me thnx soo much!!

  • Answer:

They are alike in that you have identical angles of the sun, identical day lengths. Think about a ball bouncing up and down it has a high point and a low point, as it cycles between the two, it hits the mid point twice, halfway between the high and low. Winter is like the low point, low angle of the sun because we (northern hemisphere) are tilted away from the sun, summer is like the high point...sun is higher in the sky, because we are tilted toward the sun and spring and fall are kind of like the midpoints, we are not tilted either toward or away from the sun. They are not solstices (like winter and summer) but equinoxes because the day length is exactly 12 hrs. The difference is the trajectory...the direction (colder or warmer) we're heading at that time of the year. You should look at a model of the earth in it's path around the sun, and the analemma. This might be helpful: http://www.analemma.com/Pages/framesPage.html The suns diameter is not something that has an annual cycle. Our distance from the sun changes, but this does not relate to seasons. I think you mean the angle of the sun? This varies where you are by latitude, and by season.

It has to do with the earth's dihedral angle to the plane intersecting the sun of 23.5°. The angle of incidence of the sun's light on the earth's surface is the same in the spring and fall. If that doesn't make sense, you need to look at a 3D model of the earth revolving around the sun. Depending on which hemispere you are in, you should be able to see how the shallow angle in winter and the steeper angle in summer affect temperature. Half way between (at opposite points around the earth's orbital path around the sun) you will have spring and fall. http://www.materialworlds.com/sims/SolarSystem/index.html
