What do you think about a math book with only examples ?

  • If you have already answered, then please don't respond again. I would like to know the opinions of those who haven't had a chance to answer. Students in my past algebra classes (college level) have informed me that the textbooks do not have enough examples and lack detail. (I don't want to go into the details of this, but it's mainly to reduce the cost of the book). I am currently working on an example book just for ALGEBRA. The purpose of this book is to provide a variety of examples for students. I do plan on marketing this book for teachers, students as well home-schoolers. There will be detailed examples at different degrees of difficulty. It will also contain practice problems, with the solutions online. In addition, a few of the examples will require thought process, and will not be found in any other textbooks. It will also contain real life application problems that use algebra, unlike those train problems. This will give students an interesting perspective on algebra. I realize there are some books out there such as Schaum's outlines, but they usually only contain simple examples that you can find in any math book. I am not recommending students learn algebra from this book. It should not be mistaken for a textbook, but rather an example book to be used along with the required textbook. I would like to hear from some of you and what you think. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

i think a more detailed Algebra book is ah-mazing! no joke. my teachers always give step-by-step examples even when they have a book, but when you go home you still don't understand it because their isn't enough detail to help you with problems like the examples. say for instance that my teacher gives me a short problem and when i go home and do my homework we get nothing but long problems? it would be awsome if their was a book with more detail and examples and less writing that i do NOT understand.

Im in differential equations 2 so I have a lot of experience with math. I think that the texts of EVERY single math book I have ever had doesnt make sense at all. It is the examples that I understood waaaayyyyy before the literature! Problem is you are going to have a hard time selling the book to colleges and such with no text. Good luck though. I think it is a great idea but some people may not.

I would like it a lot. I'm more of a visual learner, by simply reading the directions, I won't completely understand it. But seeing it, step by step, then I'll understand it better. Even if there weren't any directions given, as long as I saw how they got the answer, I'm pretty sure I could figure it out for myself how the answer was derived. It would be awesome to have a book like this out.

Sounds great. The problem is that first students complain about when are they going to have to use this in real life. Then you give them application problems and they complain that they hate word problems. It's certainly not a substitute for a regular textbook but I think students need to see a book like that. Send me an advance copy, I'd love to review it :)

My Algebra text book has a few examples of different ways to solve the equation, then it has about 60 questions telling you to solve the first 20 like the first example, the second 20 like the second example, and the last 20 like the last example. Everyone loves our text book. In the examples, in shows how to solve it by writing it out in brief sentences, and by working it out. They do this because some students understand it one way, while others understand things in another format. I hope I helped!

I am taking a College Algebra Class which came with a Text Book that has instruction and an answer key book for all the problems in the text (even numbers) explaining the processes. I dont think you can have just an example book because math is a collective learning process. You must understand the first concept in order to understand all other exercises and processes which follow. I am bad at math and have managed to use these books through an online class with some online math calculators at www.analyzemath.com which show me step by step instructions and where I made my miscalcualtions. The math books I have are out of date for schools, but if you would like them to use so you are not building totally from scratch, hit me up on email and I will mail my books off to you to help. There must be a review of lessons so processes are understood.

I think textbooks with explained examples are the key to understanding. I noticed that If a textbook is factually correct, has examples and explanations I can rely on it 100% for even self study of a topic. I recommend that the examples are really interesting and have some humor. I had a textbook where a calculus problem involved calculating the time of death in a murder case (or something along those lines) I had physics books where you had to calculate how long a person had to live when they jumped of the Eiffel tower. However you dont have to include dark humor. Just anything that puts a smile on a person's face. Have a mix of word problems and just straightforward calculations. You should also concentrate on making it accessible to people with limited english skills....just use simple everyday language. Also don't dumb it down too much... sure include some easy questions but include some really challenging ones as well. Also make the answers available (either in the back of the book or in a seperate publication)

i think the idea is good but there are definitely some road blocks you could potentially run in to. the first and foremost being that most schools tend to stick with 1 publisher for all of their textbook needs. second, if you were to market to teachers they would have to pay out of pocket because of the first problem and not alot of teachers have that kind of money to throw away (possibly college professors but middle school and high school teachers have algebra classes as well) i truly love math and ive found that most teachers will provide examples due to the fact that the books have slim to none. however it is true that the more examples you see and the more examples you do the better you understand and ultimately the better you do. so it is a good idea and i hope you do whatever you think is best in the end

i think thats a great idea
