Average Acceleration?

Average Acceleration help PLZ?!?!?

  • Can you guys help me calculate the average acceleration of these 5 roller coasters?!? PLZ???!!?? Height Length Speed (rate) Duration of ride (time) Average acceleration 75ft 2,614ft 45mph 58 sec 131.25ft 1,013.75ft 50mph 20 sec 145ft 3,900ft 60mph 65 sec 181ft 4,400ft 70mph 63 sec 85ft 2,851ft 60mph 48 sec ( sorry if the format is a bit confusing)

  • Answer:

Well, formula for average acceleration is the following: Average acceleration = (Change in velocity) / (Change in time) Refering to the first example, I don't know why there are given height and length. However, first you should convert everything into one measurement system. You have feet, miles, seconds and hours. Let's leave only feet and seconds. 45mph will be equal to 237600 feet per hour. Now convert ftph to ftps like a boss: 237600/60 = 3960/60 = 66 ftps If initial velocity is zero then average acceleration will be 66 ftps/58 sec = 1 feet per sec^2 The same is for the rest. Not sure why you are given hight and length parameters - is it a catch or you really have to use it somehow. I don't know that much physics. Hope it helps.
