How long does a human live?

If the entire history of earth was summed up in 24 hours, how long will the human race live in comparison?

  • The earth is like 4.5 billion years old. If you cram all those 4.5 billion years into 24 hours, about how long does the human race last in comparison?

  • Answer:

Humanity has been around for approximately 10,000 years of anything worth note, now, lets put that in proportion to 4.5 billion. 10,000 ------------------- 4,500,000,00 and then we have 24 hours. We set up a proportion. 10k over 4.5b, and x over 24. multiply 10k by 24, you get 240,000 divided by 4.5 billion, and the final answer is: .000053 hours. Now to convert that to minutes, 60 ---- 1 x -- .000053 Multiply .000053 by sixty, divided by 1. .00318 minutes is our answer. repeat that for seconds. All in all, about .1908 seconds.

Less than 1 second

Life has existed on Earth for 18 hours. Animal life has existed on Earth's land surfaces for 2 hours and 24 minutes. The mammal order evolved 18 minutes ago. The hominid family has been around for 1 minute and 24 seconds. Humans have been civilized for something like 0.15 seconds. Earth may remain at least marginally habitable for perhaps another five hours. If humans can develop interstellar flight and carry the Life of Earth to other homes (planets, space stations), then it could have a future run through the universe of about 60 years, using this same compressed time scale. Otherwise, the whole show is over in about five hours.

Well, lets find out. Well say that humanity has lasted for 10,000 years. We know that we have lasted longer, but our civilization actually started to get together around this time. 10,000 / 4.5e9 = x / 24 x = 0.192 seconds. Wow, we aren't even a second compared to a 24 hour day and the actual time of the earth.

The Cosmos

Well, the earth has existed for six billion years. Upright primates have existed about a million. So upright primates have been here about one six hundreth of Earth's history. On six humdreth of 24 hours is about 25 minutes. Humans have only been here about ten thousand years. That's one six hundred thousanth of earths history. That's approximately 4 ten thousanths of a second.

it is wrong to say that human are present on earth for 10,000 years . In reality the homo genre has been present on earth for about 2,50,000 years . According to me it would be about 2.7 seconds

If by human you mean Homo then we've been around since about the start of the pleistocene, 2.588 mya. That would be about 50 seconds. If you mean modern humans then we're talking about 5 seconds or less.

For a paper once - in a lifetime long, long ago - I scaled the age of the Earth, 6 billion years, into a century. At that scale, humans have only been around for the most recent 8.5 MINUTES! So, scale that down to a single day...we do not amount to a hill of beans!
