Will Pluto and Neptune ever collide?

Will Pluto and Neptune ever collide? If so, when will it happen and how will it affect us here on Earth?

  • Answer:

In their current orbits, Pluto and Neptune will never collide, since Pluto is in a 3-to-2 resonance with Neptune. That means that for every two orbits of Pluto, Neptune executes three orbits; thus, they’re never close to one another in their trips around the Sun (instead, Neptune is always 90 degrees ahead of or behind Pluto when Pluto is closest to the Sun). Even though the orbits of Neptune and Pluto seem to overlap, they will never actually collide. Many of the newly-discovered objects (hundreds of ’em now) out near Pluto have these kinds of resonances. If they didn’t, they’d be more likely to collide with Neptune, and Neptune is probably responsible for shepherding them into these stable configurations. HUH! I have never heard bout this....what ever it is ....even if ti collides....i don't think it will ever effect the earth and earthlings...maybe we wud be able to see the huge explosion with our naked eye...and see lots of dust, smoke, fire...and whatever wud come out of it......it's too far away to affect us in anyway...maybe

No they will never collide. It is a reasonable question, however, as Pluto's orbit is chaotic (affected by the gravity of other big planets, most notably Neptune) and its orbit does take it inside the orbit of Neptune (as it was between 1979 and 1999). Even if they did collide, Pluto is so small compared to Neptune, that it would have negligible effect. BTW, Neptune's largest moon, Triton, is falling inward, and will collide with Neptune in about 10-million to 100-million years. Triton is about the same size and consistency as Pluto.

erm... i don't think they will ever collide coz pluto's orbit is a little different. its orbit is... erm... how to say... not like other planets' orbit. if i remember right, it is 15 degree slanted. so, i dun really think they will collide. your imagination is good. maybe u should consider writing science fiction novel.
