How many solar systems are there?

Solar systems, galaxy's and the universe, how do they all fit together?

  • Hi! I'm confused about how all the parts of our universe fit together. I know that there's planets in solar systems, but how many solar systems are in a galaxy, and how many galaxy's are in the universe? I'm really confused and could some one explain it to me in simple language? Thank you!

  • Answer:

Going to the very small, you would go to what is called atoms, atoms are small bits of matter and it is this matter that makes up everything in the universe, you and me and everything around us. Planets fit into a solar system, solar systems make up galaxies and galaxies make up the universe, simple. You cannot say how many galaxies or planets there are in the universe, there are just to many, so we just estimate. Galaxies are all different in size, our closest neighbouring galaxy which is named Andromeda is twice as big as us. There is no way to say how many solar systems are in a certain galaxy, all the galaxies are very different in size and there are at least 120 billion galaxies all together in the universe. How about this question: What makes up a library? If you ask most people that question, they are going to say books, however it is not so simple. So you need to break it down, you get the letter, and from the letter you get the sentences, and from the sentences you get the book. So what's the basic building block of the library, the letter, so what's the basic building block of the universe, the atom. From the atom you get the planets, from the planets you get the solar systems and from the solar systems you get the universe, again there is no way of knowing exactly how many solar systems fit into one galaxy since galaxies are all different sizes.

You are apparently also confused about how to spell. 'Galaxy's' would be a possessive, as in 'the galaxy's rotation takes the earth round the centre eveery million years or so'. You want the plural, 'galaxies'. The smallest of the units you quote is as you sa, the solar system, the hub of which is the sunm a star. There are typically something in the region of 100bn stars in a galaxy, although the numbers do vary quite a lot. Some dwarf galaxies, like the Magellanic Clouds which are also part of our local cluster, are much smaller. How many of those stars have systems of planets like our sun's we really don't know - but it is beginning to look as if there are at least as many planets as stars in total. The number of galaxies in the universe seems to be of a fairly similar order - something in the region of 100bn again. Bear in mind that these numbers are necessarily very uncertain, and we're not even certain whether the universe is finite or not.

Galaxies differ in size (and shape), but there are billions of solar systems in our galaxy, and there are billions of galaxies in the universe. It's pretty mind boggling.

The answer is nobody knows. One reason is because (assuming that the Big Bang Theory is true), only object that are up to 13.75 light years away from us, while universe stretches far beyond that. But it is certain that galaxies are very numerous, they form structures themselves as well, and they area called super clusters. The bottom line is that your area talking about tiny elements of the universe that area very hard to quantify.

Thomas

There is a theory that says there are infinitely number of galaxies in the universe. I find this to be quite truthful. As far as solar systems go, there is no fixed number.

planet -> solar system -> galaxy -> Universe Each one varies in size and number.
