  • Were courageous female character such as heroine very very extraordinary in 1920s and 1930s? I mean movies.

  • Answer:

Women were not action heroes. They were damsels to be rescued and moral support for the action hero first and foremost. Occasionally, you had "strong" women characters such as Dorothy in "The Wizard Of Oz" and Scarlet O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind" The only courageous female characters were the feme fatal usually a villain character. For really extraordinary females in Hollywood, look up Mary Pickford (co-founder of United Artists) and Greta Garbo.

They were certainly rare commodities. Sadly, most females were used as back drops and were not given strong roles to play. A brave and courageous woman was just not seen much in that time period. Things have changed for the better. Now we have Ellen Ripley, Alice (Resident Evil), Norma Rae, Clarisse Starling, Lara Croft, etc.
