Are there free online communication classes?

Would you agree that the school cariculum should include classes on communication development?

  • If most arguemnets stem from a lack of communication or from a misunderstanding. Wouldn't it be a good idea to teach debate in junior high, and continue into high school?

    Communication is one key to success in life. I am a high school public speech teacher. I think all students should be required to take at least a semester of a communication class. It helps the students build self-confidence, better listening skills, and stronger speaking skills.

My school used to have one of their graduation requirements being a Public Speaking class (1 quarter long). It was gotten rid of for a year or 2 and now it's an elective.

Academic vocabulary and purposed discourse are sorely needed. Students need this from teachers in middle school at the very latest so that secondary students have not fallen through the proverbial cracks.

Yes. Debate is good but many schools are busy measuring their success in reading, writing and arithmetic to have time for debate. Communication can be developed without it being part of the curriculum. Young people need to talk more with adults. It would help them learn to think before speaking and to clearly express their thoughts.

Here in British Columbia, the Ministry of Education has just revamped the Language Arts curriculum to include a lot of oral language in the prescribed learning outcomes - i.e. presentations, debates etc. This is for all grade levels. Because families are so busy, there is less time spent talking and kids are suffering. Families need to get back into the habit of sitting around the dinner table and talking.
