What should I teach in High school besides English?
-
I am currently attending university and plan to teach high school when I am done. My major is English but I cannot decide on a minor. I am leaning towards Psychology but am not sure how marketable that would make me. Science and Math are not an option. Do high schools offer Psych classes?? What minor would make me most marketable???

I actually have the same problem. You could minor in social sciences. This covers a very large array of different classes you could teach. I think that might be a good route to go if your interested in multitasking as a teacher. Hope this helps.

I am a teacher in Canada and I know that at least here and New York State, 2 teachable subjects are required for high school. If you want to have a broad base on your second subject, do a Social Studies minor (Economics, Politics, History, etc.) A few psych courses will help you to be marketable in your work with students, but you need a taught subject to teach, with enough undergrad credits to qualify for it. Check your school options for their requirements on teachables. See what they offer and go from there. Good luck!

Very honestly, I would minor in Business. Learning how Business works will open up other options for you, that can help you become a better teacher, or simply make you more money. Business would open up a new subject for you to teach (most schools teach Business skills, accounting, etc.) and give you a diversity in your thinking that another "story subject" like History or Sociology would not. Not to mention - it would put you in control of your personal life and finances - a very big deal in today's world.

Psychology is definitely a good option if you are interested in it, definitely marketable with very wide scope applications, talk to your careers adviser and lecture professors at uni, they are the best to help clarify any issues in this area. Try and find out who would be taking the classes and make an appointment, you can sus out his or her qualities and decide if you think you can relate to them, very important as you always do better with someone you get on with. (and that is psychology in it's most basic form) cheers and good luck.

Perhaps Psychology as a major (double major)! This was my major and I loved it. It is such a broad subject base or rather it covers so many subjects such as sociology, womens issues, history, polititics, etc. and it is not so specific that you are stuck into one subject base.

In my school, there is a psych class, but it is only a term class, as apposed to a semester, and is not looked upon with much weight
