In the desert plants only grow for a short time after it rains, in the tundra plants only grow for a short time after the top part of the permafrost thaws

well the desert and the tundra are similar because in both u can barely live in, they both have strong winds. they are different because they are totally in different temperatures, one is in the south and the the other in the north, the desert gets rain and the tundra gets more snow, its hot in the desert and cold in the tundra.

The tundra actually is a desert, having very little rainfall. Like deserts in the rest of the world it gets less than 10 inches of rainfall a year. In a sense, the tundra is also a lanfd of extremes, somewhat like a desert. The tundra biome is at the top of the world -- around the North Pole! Below a thin layer of tundra soil is its permafrost, a permanently frozen layer of ground. During the brief summers, the top section of the soil may thaw just long enough to allow plants and microorganisms to grow and reproduce. The desert is a land of extremes: extreme heat and extreme dryness; sudden flash floods and cold nights. Because deserts are such a harsh environment, deserts often have names likes "Death Valley," "the empty quarter," and "the place from where there is no return." Follow the links at each of these sites and I think you will get all the information you need to compare deserts and the tundra.
