You can design a website in 30 hours. Your friend can design the same site in 20 hours. How long will it take to design the website if you both work together? Please show your work on how you arrived at the answer. Explain if possible.

Answer:
You can do it in x/30 + x/20 time, where x is the total hours. Since each hour, you accomplish 1/30 of the task. x/30 + x/20 = 1. Solve and get 12. If you think about it, this answer checks. You won't both get the half done. After 12 hours, you would have done 12/30 of the work and your friend would have done 12/20 of the work, assuming the pace is constant. 12/30 + 12/20 adds to all of the work being done.

Working together, it will take you 500 hours. Trust me on this. Just the meetings will take a week. But here's what you tell your Math teacher: Your Friend "F" works at 1/20 of a website in an hour. You "Y" work at the rate of 1/30 of a website per hour. Together you work at a combined rate of 3/60 + 2/60 or 5/60 website per hour. That's 1/12 per hour, or 12 hours for the whole thing. Really, everyone knows that websites are never finished. But that's a Calculus problem....

15+10=25. You each do half the work, do 1/2 of 30=15, and 1/2 of 20=10.

if you do half the work and he does half the work it would be 30/2 + 20/2 = 25 15 + 10 = 25

Simple - you take the average of both times. 30 + 20 = 50 divide that by 2 = 25

I forget the specific formulas for these problems, but here goes: Your friend can finish 5% of a web page per hour. 100% / 20 hours = 5% per hour. You can finish 3.33333% of a web page per hour. 100% / 30 hours = 3.33333% per hour Together, you finish 8.33333% of a web page per hour. 5% + 3.333333% = 8.3333333% Together, you finish a web page in about 12 hours. 100% / 8.333333% = 12.000000000048 hours Answer: 12 hours.
