What does "the rationale of a lawsuit" mean in this paragraph?

• I really dont know what does this mean? I have a homework which I need to write about how to protect trademarks, patents. In this homework, there is a business store which has the same name of my business. So I need to tell them to change their name. In adition, I need to write a paragraph about the rationale of a lawsuit. Would somebody help me out please? I really dont know what does "rationale of a law suit" mean?

The rationale, or argument, is where where you combine the facts, statutory and case law showing how the law relates to the facts in the case and support position or conclusion. (Sometimes the summary is separated from the rationale giving four parts.)
