Where would I have to go to obtain a basic food hygiene certificate?

I want to setup a meals on wheels service. Do I need a food hygiene/safety certificate before I can go ahead?

  • I am a decent cook and understand basic health and safety in the kitchen. Is it illegal to setup a catering service without any formal qualification?

  • Answer:

You will need approval to set-up and process food! You need to contact your District or County Council who provide advice and most importantly support to all food businesses, voluntary groups and charities and also the public. They also inspect food preparation areas , storage and transport suitability and enforce food hygiene legislation rigorously. Don’t be put off by all this they are there to help. Best a luck.

yes you will have to be certified and inspected as if your buisness were a resturant.

Yes you will and I agree you will be best to speak to your local council offices as you may need other licences too

Yes you will need a certificate, and as the previous answerer has said you may well need other licenses too. You may well indeed also need a CRB check since I imagine you will be dealing with vulnerable people (i.e. the elderly or disabled).

You might find that your council already has one operating.

Hi, in the UK no definite certificates needed to start up, but you do need to tell the local council very soon after start up (Environmental Health) who will inspect the premises. It would also be wise to get a basic food hygiene certificate from the council too - a 1 day course usually. there are certain expectations upon small businesses to demonstrate that the food is safe. search the food standards agency website below for "safer food better business" - there's a lot of free info. good luck!
