I have been looking to get a grant for starting a business and have had no luck with it at all. Every time I find one that looks good and might work I get the run around. I need to know what forms do I need to fill out or just how do I go about getting a grant to start a business. Thanks so very much for the help. Mistee

Answer:
It is hard to find grants to start a business -- unless you live in rural depressed areas, disabled or an American Indian living in a poor reservation. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business. Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture. Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business. Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html --------------------------------------… "The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments." --------------------------------------… Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business -- THERE'S NONE. http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

There are essentially only 3 sources for grants. Federal grants are called Small Business Innovation Research grants. These are given primarily for some new innovation. You can find out what's available at www.sbirworld.com. There is also info on this site about how to apply. Some cities offer grants to small businesses if they will locate in the downtown area, for the purposes of building up downtown traffic. Check with City Hall. Finally, private foundations offer grants. You can get a list of most US Foundations and private grant sources at www.foundations.org/grantmakers.html.

First of all if you have any doubts about there being any grant programs out there then you should go to my Grant Basics 101 page at: http://members.aol.com/Roseb441702/grants.htm and my Grants Blog at: http://grantbasics101.blogspot.com Second of all since we can't determine what sites you have been at its just too hard to advise you from there. Finding grant programs, doing grant research and writing grants involves a lot of work. I don't know what you have been doing to be getting the "run around" but it has been my experience that the organizations that have these grant programs are pretty straight forward in posting the information about their grant programs because they want people to understand what has to be done in order to apply for them. The sad fact of the matter is that just because you haven't found these grant programs doesn't mean that they aren't out there - it just means that you haven't found them yet. Another detail that you didn't mention is what kind of business it is that you wanted to start? I know of a grant program that awards $100,000 to help people fulfill their dreams and this grant money is given to the individual and they can spend that money any way that they want! How did I find this grant program? Quite simply I looked for it! I'm currently talking to a guy who is looking for grant programs to help produce his music CD. And do you know there are grant programs out there for that! I just posted on my blog today saying that no matter what people tell you as far as them saying that there are no grant programs out there to start a business they are wrong and it is as simple as that. Now you may get frustrated looking for the grant programs that you can apply for but like I said above - just because you haven't found them doesn't mean that they don't exist - that just means that you haven't found them yet! And before someone brings up the subject of Matthew Lesko according to his bio he got started finding grant programs for big businesses - and if you don't think that businesses take advantage of the government grant programs then you are in denial! So there are grant programs out there to start a business. The problem is that you have to do the work to find them - it is just as simple as that! Finding grant programs is what I do and if you want to believe the people that say there are no grant programs out there for starting a business then you go right on believing that. I should also note that on my grants page at the very bottom is a piece about "if you still think there's no hope" as far as government grant programs are concerned - it lists some information about people who have gotten grants. So if you don't want to believe it - then don't.
