How do you build a good resume if youve been a stay at home mom for 5 years?
-
i have also been a daycare provider for 5 years. How do I build on this without making employers think I have no experience or skills?
-
Answer:
Make a list of the skills you have used as a stay at home mom and daycare provider. Make the list very detailed. Start by making a list of tasks you have performed. Then list the skills required to perform those tasks. Now you have a list of your skills. Make a list of jobs where the same skills are required. Now you have a list of possible jobs you can apply for. Write the resume so that you emphasize your skills rather than your employment history. This is called a functional resume. Put your skills at the begining of the resume, followed by your employment history in brief form ( where, when, what your main duty was, keep it very brief because you are emphasizing skills and not duties). Education and references follow that. Done.

Rework your previous resume. In other words go back and contact people from previous jobs you've held and let them know that you are re-entering the workforce and want them as a solid contact for your resume. Next, build some contacts for your "stay at home" time. Clergy, an attorney or CPA or your family Doctor. These are people who know you, know your family and know you're a good person. People who will be happy for you to use them as a reference. Highlight your skills and expound upon the experience you do have in different areas or, better yet, in the area you are seeking to work in. Unless it's a technically specialized field highlight your personality and interpersonal skills. Talk about providing excellent customer service. Then show it. Look around at businesses in your community and look for holes. What are holes? Holes are gaps in the marketplace within the business community. For example when I go to Wal-mart (not to just pick on them) and I need help with something (like getting a bicycle off the top rack) there is never anyone around! I can either walk around and try and find someone or I can pick up one of their phones and say "I am a customer and I have cash. I want a bicycle and require assistance from a capable employee pronto." Customers shouldn't have to look for employees to provide them with an acceptable standard of customer service. That's what they have their job for. And that's what I'm talking about when I say "show it."
