Painful when donating blood?

Does blood type matter when donating white blood cells?

  • I have a friend who is battling Leukemia, and he recently contracted a fungal infection in his sinuses. Because his body is not generating white blood cells, his immune system cannot fight the infection. The course of action his doctors are taking is to infuse white blood cells into his body in order to fight the infection. He is in need of white cell donations. My question is, does blood type matter when donating white blood cells? If not, this means that anyone can donate on his behalf.

  • Answer:

Yes blood type does matter. Compatibility testing has to be done if the product given has more than 2mL of rbc's in it. To the previous poster: you can donate white blood cells through leukapheresis. Graft-versus-host-disease is a very real possibility due to the fact that you can't entirely separate the lymphocytes from the granulocytes, therefore to minimize the risk of GVHD, the product is irradiated which keeps the granulocytes viable but renders the lymphocytes impotent.

I do not believe there is such a thing as donating white blood cells - that would most likely cause graft vs. host disease (look it up). What they are probably doing is giving him medication that boosts his own body's white blood cell production (nulastin, Nupigen, etc.) - either that or you are talking about him receiving a bone-marrow transplant.
