How reliable is an ultrasound scan?

How safe is an ultrasound scan as regards cancer promoting effects?

  • Scans and xrays, said a recent study, promote cancer. But some say ultrasound scans are not that harmful. I would like to know how far this is true so that we can make practical decisions related to this.

  • Answer:

Ultrasounds use sound waves, not radiation. Cancer isn't caused by soundwaves, so it's fine.

The only known effect of ultrasound on the human body is concerning the internal temperature. Some studies suggested that a long ultrasound exam can locally raise the temperature between 0.5-1.0 degree. This effect could be especially real with the use of Doppler technique when studying the vascular structures. But then the next question is : what is the effect of raising the temperature. There is no fact to proove that a 0.5-1.0 degree raise can cause cancer. So we can conclude that ultrasound is harmless. We are usually only aware of using Doppler on a first trimester obstetrical ultrasound; to avoid raising the local temperature on the 5 mm fetus.

ultrasound is more safe that x-rays ultrasound throws off laser where xrays throws off radiation which too much causes cancer

The only danger from getting an ultrasound is if the technician squirts that goo in your eye. Ultra sound is NOT laser, it's sound, hence the name. Some people's kids...
