How's it going to be if I join as a deck cadet on a merchant vessel ?

I intend to ask about a little briefing on hows is it going to be if a join merchant navy as a deck cadet and not as a deck rating ? Is it going to be as horrible as it is for being a rating or a little better for the ones who are in the learning period as trainees or cadets ?? Will you have 6-8 cadets sleeping in one room and sharing the same shower head ? cuz that's what I heard about what it's going to be like when I'm in the rating... please do let me know mates..
