Cost of living on a boat and traveling the world?
-
I want to save up and buy a nice boat (possibly sail boat to save on gas?) I want to travel the world. I have a list of all these deserted (or almost deserted) islands I want to go to. I want to have a nice big living space in the boat. The best word I can think of is 'classy'... I was thinking it may even have to be a yacht? So, what would a 50foot boat like this cost? How about 100ft or 200ft? I don't expect this to happen for atleat five or ten years, which is why I want to start saving now. I also don't expect to have costs for storing my boat somewhere, because I will always be out in the ocean with it, never just sitting in the docks. Also, is it possible to get cellphone and internet in the middle of the ocean? Or will it be in the future? I'd like to maintain a travel website while I am out traveling.

Answer:
No, it is not a "millionaires" dream. And that "belief" is so untrue, I can hardly stand it. Fact is, according to a recent Boat US survey, most (61%) of couples living a-board and cruising in Paradise - are spending less than $20,000 a year. Half (50%) of them are spending less than $15,000 a year. Obviously, this is not just a millionaires dream. In fact, when you get "out here" you will discover that "yachts and millionaires" are seldom seen except in or near their home ports. "Out here" You DON'T need a boat that shows the world how far you've come - you simply need a boat that will get you safely and comfortably, where you want to go. So, it's not the size of your dream, it is the size of your "dream boat" that needs adjusting. If in fact, this is "really" something you want to do, (and not a passing fancy) then your "dream boat" is way too big. For what you want to do, even 50 feet is way too big. In order to do this, you DON"T want a boat as big as you can afford. Your boat instead, must be the smallest boat you can live comfortably on, and handle all by yourself. In addition, it needs to be a simple as it can possibly be. I strongly encourage you to visit the website below. This will provide you with some insight as to how to do exactly what you describe, on a very frugal budget.

You'll need an ocean going boat, so 50 foot won't do. Also, cell phones don't work if there are no towers, so you'll need a satellite phone. It's a millionairs dream....
