How many compression rings do pistons in marine engines normally have?

  • Answer:

Most often 2 to no more than 4. Outboards tend to have more different designs but I've seen a lot of different positions for the rings. If you are taking a mechanics test, there are "wiper" rings and compression rings so be careful when ask how many and be able to identify them.

The compression ring is actually a set of rings installed on the bottom groove of the piston. It will be a scraper ring then a expansion ring then another scraper ring. After reading what I have said here. I see That i misread the question. i actually was thinking oil ring not compression ring. My mistake.OOPS

2 stroke outboard? 4 stroke outboard? I/O? Diesel? Usually 2 I believe, but can vary depending on the type of motor.

For small inboard boats, it's traditionally been 2-3.
