Evinrude outboard motor repair?

90s model 4 horsepower Evinrude outboard boat motor cuts off at full throttle. Whats wrong?

  • I have a 1990s model 4 horsepower Evinrude. I have been running it on a canoe for about a year. Since it was on a canoe and on a side mount I was never able to go at full throttle. I recently purchased a small jon boat that I am using the 4 hp on now. The first time I took the new jon boat out a couple of weeks ago, I cranked up the motor to full throttle. Within probably a 1/4 of a mile at full throttle the motor sputtered and died. I was able to get it back running after several pulls and I was off again, but it soon died when I put it back at full. I know nothing about boat motors, but I did notice that the fuel ball (from the gas tank) was not tight when the boat motor cut off. I paid $150 for the outboard a year ago and then had to pay another $200 to get it working right. Now a year later, it is not working right. I really don't want to pay another $200 to get it fixed. Please let me know if any of you have any suggestions. I thought about buying a can of carb cleaner to spray just in case it might have something to do with this but I am so ignorant on boat motors and engines in general that I don't even know where to spray the cleaner. Eventually I would like to learn how to do my own work on outboards but I am a little scared now that I'll mess up something. Either way, any help would be much appreciated.

  • Answer:

first, understand that your motor gets its lubricating oil from the gasoline. carb cleaner sprayed into the motor will bypass the jets that need cleaning, and go straight into the combustion chambers where it will do what it's designed to do: clean the oil off of metal surfaces. If you wouldn't run your motor without oil, don't run it on carb cleaner. There's really nothing that can go wrong with that motor that can't be fixed by your average do-it-yourselfer with a few basic tools and a good service manual. You can get your OEM shop manual at iboats.com or marineengine.com. If you really want to do your own maintenance, check out the repair forums at http://forums.iboats.com The motor won't run if the fuel line isn't holding pressure. Next time it starts sputtering, start squeezing the bulb. If that makes it run better, the fuel pump needs rebuilding.

the first thing is to make sure the vent screw is open on the tank, it should be on the filler cap , if its tight it will stop enough fuel from getting to the motor at high rpms. if its open then try and tighten the packing nut on the back side of the lean adjustment screw located on the front of the motor start with a 1/8 of a turn and keep tighting it till it cleans up. it's best to do it while your under way. best of luck

Check the vent on your fuel tank. If closed partly you'll get this. Also some tanks have a small filter on the pick-up tube, inside the tank, that can become clogged.

library is your best bet and I think this thing is leaning out on ya (lack of gas at high speed ) blocked maybe if ya never got it up that fast , out of ajustment more likely , try internet sources for info on your motor specificaly

If you are so ignorant about motors as you write, there can not be much help here...... but let me try..... usually there is a lack of fuel when it cuts off at full throttle. There can be some reasons, dirt in the fuel filter (if there is one), dirt in the carb (in the float chamber) or water in the fuel. In every case you have to clean the fuel system incl. the carburetor. You should look after a service/repair manual for your motor on the internet. good luck.......
