How to get your Captain's license?

When obtaining a captains license from the u s coast gaurd if you get a 50 ton masters license?

    Actually the 25 ton license is the loswest it goes.. I had a friend once who ony had experience on WIND SURFING and he got a 25 ton license WITH AUX SAIL.. so the rules are pretty easy at the lower level A 50 ton holder can operate a 100 ton vessle.. just not be CAPTAIN IN CHARGE.. hell.. i've known 50 tonners who operated tankers and ore carriers.. but not in close quarters and always with the captain or first officer present. Note to Benthic: The rules allow for a 50 tonner to perform any duties for which the captain is personally responsible and directly in charge and it is SO LOGGED... that is why I was very carefult to say "with the captain or first officer present". Logically, it can be a safety issue.. the time for a 50 tonner on the crew to helm a ship for the first time is NOT when everyone else is sick or dead, the time to learn the basics is far out at sea where they can't hit anyone or anything... and if you think they don't take it seriously.. just watch their face when you switch from AUTO to MANUAL and imagine them doing it for the FIRST TIME in a real emergency.

Yes, you can. As Dowah DItty mentioned, you a also operate in other capacities, if you've got the appropriate endorsements on your MMC. If you're going to get a 50-ton, ask for the 100gt mate, and get your Ordinary Seaman's rating while you're there. This won't entitle you to be able to steer a ship, like Dowah Ditty implied, but it gets you to the point where you can train and practice to be a helmsman, which is part of an Able Seaman's job.
