What do I need to get a deckhand job on a ship?

• I actually have several questions. I've done a lot of research, and these are the things I couldn't find answers to. I want to get a job on a ship, preferably one that goes out to sea for extended periods of time, so I can earn money without having to worry about rent, car payment, insurance, gas, food expenses, etc. I served on an aircraft carrier in the Navy for two years, so I've been out to sea for a long time before. I had a desk job though, so I don't think that will count as sea time. anyway I don't care what kind of job I have, entry level is fine with me. I have an appointment to get a TWIC next week. Will I also need a MMD? The Coast Guard site makes it sound like you need documented sea time in order to get a MMD. So are there some shipboard jobs that don't require a MMD? I'm a little confused on this. And how difficult is it to find an entry level job on a ship? Should I keep my car and job while I search for one? Or if I sell my car and my possessions would I be able to quickly find a job? And where exactly do you look for an entry level ship job? Can you just go to a port and ask when a ship is pulled in if they're hiring? Or do I need to join a union? If so how does that work? Thanks!

  Your navy time should count two for one. Two navy days for one day of sea time. Yes, you will need your MMD, STCW, and TWIC for entry level positions. You should not need any sea time for your MMD. Look into MSC (Military Sea lift Command), they are always hiring. I work in the tugboat industry, and do three weeks on/three weeks off. I belong to a union; SIU.
