What is a "head boat?

How can I extend a sonar head 12" under the transom of my boat?

  • I have a forward looking sonar I would like to install on my boat. It needs to be 12" below the lowest edge of my transom to get a clear view. I would like to make it retractable (Obviously its not a good idea to have something hanging under your boat like that in case you hit something or go into shallows. I need a setup to lower and raise (remotely) the head. The head is watertight and is connected to a 1" threaded bronze stem with wires coming out of it (from the center of he threaded stem.

  • Answer:

By the time you half-*** a solution with the existing transducer you'll end up with something that performs poorly, increases drag on the boat and will wind up getting broken anyway. Get a different transducer. There are many that can be installed inside of the hull. Many don't even need a through-hull fitting. Likewise many can be installed through hull even with steps. The trick being using the right transducer in the right location. Your boat manufacturer should be able to tell you which locations are best suited for one. It's better to get the advice from the vendor than to waste a lot of time and money experimenting with different locations and getting poor performance.
