How much is a 1972 Johnson 85hp outboard worth?

1972 50hp johnson motor?

  • is it hard to change the head gasket in a 1972 50hp johnson motor???

  • Answer:

No. In fact it's very easy. There are a number of bolts, and all but the bottom most ones are very easy to get to. Those you might have to use a wrench on, if your socket set is to long. The most important issue is to torque the bolts to the correct setting. My memory is 180 or so INCH POUNDS. (I'll check my manuals) Not foot pounds. You need to do this in a "star pattern" so that you tighten it evenly all at once. I do it in three stages. Snug the bolts hand tight, then at a setting about 3/4 final torque , then torque to spec. Job done. Inch pound torque wrenches are available inexpensively at most auto stores. You don't need the "dial" type", the triple scale type works fine. (google if you want to see what one looks like.)
