How to build an archimedes boat?

We want to build a boat.?

  • So a few friends and I want to build a boat. We want to go from Dover Tn across Ky lake and down the mississippi to go down to tunica, or maybe even little rock. We have all summer to build so I would like to know how to build one, this is our criteria - it has to be able to support 5-7 people with supplies (about 100 pounds of food clothing and stuff) and a small generator. - Since its probably a multiple day trip (we were thinking of going further and we would like to do this again) we would like to build a cabin (we on for sleeping and hanging out when its raining. - We need help with setting up some sort of steering system in the front connecting to the back, so if anyone can send a link with help that would be grateful. - we would like the roof of the cabin to be sturdy enough to hold one or two people. We are serious, we are all home from college and have some freetime and a friend has a pontoon hull for us and we decided to build off that.

  • Answer:

Um.. you DO know that in today's depressed boat market you can actually BUY a used 34 or 35 footer CHEAPER by half or 2/3 the cost of BUILDING a boat and IT WOULD BE SAFER. It's just not worth the cost and effort to build a boat when you can buy one ready buile MUCH CHEAPER. Try Boat Trader Online

if you have a pontoon hull in decent shape, you already got your boat. pontoons tend to have large decks, add a couple of tents and that is your overnight ability (probably want to tie them down, open water can have strong winds). steering system, it probably already has one. but the simplest rig is just two cables with pulleys. each cable attaches to one side of the motor (or tiller, whatever you are turning) and can pull it that direction. the other cable pulls it back the other direction. your steering wheel is just a vertical bar on the back side with the cables attached at either end. when you turn the wheel one way it pulls one cable while giving the other slack. sturdy roof, they make tops for pontoons that can hold somebody and can be used as a high dive platform. buy one of them. anything else is a kludge and could be very disasterous if it fails and falls down, possibly on top of other passengers. if you were talking from scratch, i'd say just go out and buy one. you cant buy the materials to build a sturdy, solid, reliable and safe boat for less then the manafactures who buy in BULK can. and in this economy, lots of 20XX boats for sale cheap. and your camping trip, most campground drug raids i am aware of are pot (marijuana) farms. when up and running, they can be dangerous to be near. but pot is far less harmful to its users, including mentally, then meth is. and users of any illegal drug dont hang around places where the supply has already been siezed by the police......

Tom Sawyer rides again! Go for it, but don't skimp on the PFDs. There's probably some safety requirements like equipment you must have onboard depending on the length - flares, anchor, bailers etc., plus approved lights, and you'd need a boating permit if you have an engine. When you build stuff like cabins on top of the hull, make sure you don't affect the stability or the total capacity. Should be fun if you do it properly but we don't want to hear about you sinking and having to be rescued :-7

If you find the plastic 55 gal drums, it will support 500 lbs for each. Lash them to make a pontoon style boat. Takes less power than a badge type boat.
